This page summarizes what the published research literature reports about pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) in the context of cardiovascular research. It does not claim that any PEMF device will improve, reverse, prevent, treat, or extend the life of any person with congestive heart failure (CHF). Group-level findings from small studies do not predict individual outcomes.
What researchers have studied
The clinical PEMF literature specifically on congestive heart failure as a measured endpoint is limited. Most of the published PEMF cardiovascular work has examined microcirculation — small-vessel blood flow — in animal models and in small human studies, rather than heart failure or hard cardiac outcomes. Microcirculation and heart failure are distinct research questions; findings in one do not translate to the other.
A small number of animal studies have examined PEMF exposure after experimentally induced myocardial infarction and reported changes in cardiac function markers at the group level. These are hypothesis-generating findings in laboratory animals and are not clinical evidence for use in patients with heart failure.
Regulatory status
No general-wellness PEMF system has FDA clearance for the treatment of heart failure, coronary artery disease, hypertension, arrhythmia, or any other cardiovascular indication. FDA-cleared PEMF devices in separate regulatory categories are cleared for unrelated indications (adjunct treatment of certain nonunion long bone fractures, postoperative pain and edema, treatment-resistant major depressive disorder).
Contraindications and precautions
- Do not use PEMF if you have a pacemaker, ICD, or other implanted electronic cardiac device. Pulsed electromagnetic fields can interfere with device operation.
- Consult your cardiologist before using any wellness device if you have any diagnosed cardiovascular condition, arrhythmia, unstable angina, recent myocardial infarction, or if you take anticoagulant medication.
- PEMF should not be used during pregnancy, in the presence of active bleeding, or over an active malignancy.
